Each face comes with a name and with a story. God loves and cares for each of the more than 250,000 students who are on campuses all across the greater Houston area! Although the work is at times challenging, the rewards are even greater, as God gives us opportunity time after time to see transformation in the lives of these students.

How To Pray For Those Who Minister To Students

As you might imagine, the challenges of being a minister to those on the university campus are equal to the challenges of being a student. Not only must our Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) staff respond to the needs of the Christian students with whom they come into contact, but they must have a vision for the incredible number of students on their campus who do not yet know Christ. Our staff emphasizes 5 key areas in their ministry; relational evangelism, missions/missional living, whole life discipleship, churchlife and student leadership. They face the formidable task of helping students discover who they are in Christ, regardless of where they are in that journey, and helping those students come to understand their identity in Christ. So many important decisions are made by young people during the university years and BSM staff desire to see those decisions made from the perspective of knowing Christ and desiring first and foremost to be His disciple.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for the personal life of the BSM staff. Collegiate ministry doesn't take place within the 8-5 work day and many times those who work on campus work late into the night, keeping the schedule of a college student. Yet they have families with children and the need to have relationships with friends outside the college campus. With their schedules, this can be very challenging.
  • Pray for BSM staff to be learners. Those who work with students must constantly be sharpening their minds in order to recognize and anticipate trends amongst students, and to know how to respond to those trends. The gospel never changes, but how we share the gospel effectively in a constantly changing culture must be a top priority.
  • Pray for BSM staff to have significant connections with local churches. We in BSM believe in the local church! We desire to have significant connections with local churches and to help students to find the place where they can invest of their lives in the Body of Christ. We see ourselves as missional partners with churches, targeting the university campus. Pray for creative ways for churches and BSM to work together in impacting the lives of students.
  • Pray for BSM staff to be missional in their focus. It is very clear that ministry on the university campus is missions ministry. Although they may not go overseas, workers on campus must learn a new language and new culture. In order to be effective in this ministry, they must be missional in their approach and in their focus. We have no desire to retreat or seek refuge from the campus, but rather to be very intentional in reaching out on campus. Pray that our workers would not get stuck in their buildings, but would be active on campus, encountering students who do not yet know Christ, building relationships and sharing Christ in culturally appropriate ways.
