The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical district in the world! It is in this environment that there are over 33,000 full time students and about 75,000 part time students who attend here. These students include not only those working on Medical degrees, but also Dental, Health Science Masters, Nursing, and other degrees. Students here are involved in leading edge research, but also becoming trained to serve throughout the state of Texas and the nation. The Christian population of doctors and scientists has been estimated at about 10%. The need for those who are able to verbalize and stand strong for their faith is great. In addition to that, there is a great need for students to be able to hear the good news of Jesus.
What We DoWe do a weekly luncheon with students in the Med Center called Heartbeat. We welcome doctors from the medical community as well as pastors to communicate how to integrate faith and practice with students as they prepare to serve others with their profession in a field that has only a few people of faith. In the Spring, we do medical mission trips with Christian doctors. It is fantastic for each of these students to be able to get to practice what they've been learning in the classroom as well as for those who have been in a traditional setting learning to operate in a non-traditional setting with people who have great needs. One of the other great things that happens as well is that the doctors get to spend time with the students and share their experiences with the students as well showing them how to integrate their faith and practice by spending time with them.
