Houston Area BSM Touches Countless Lives

Each face comes with a name and with a story. God loves and cares for each of the more than 250,000 students who are on campuses all across the greater Houston area! Although the work is at times challenging, the rewards are even greater, as God gives us opportunity time after time to see transformation in the lives of these students.

San Jacinto College is home to a little over 14,000 students. It is purely a commuter campus, meaning that it has no residential housing. It is strictly a 2 year college where students can work to attain an Associates degree or simply work to towards building hours to transfer to a 4 year University. There are also several technical programs where students can go straight from the program to a guaranteed position with a company.

This presents some interesting challenges for ministry on campus. While the BSM does have a building, it is not the center point of campus and we have to work very hard to make our presence known on the campus and also help students to find where we are located. It also challenges us to do ministry a little differently then what others might consider typical for a BSM.

We are about 2 basic things at San Jac: sharing Christ and helping to develop leaders. This happens in a variety of ways. We have a Wednesday lunch that is free for any student that would like to come eat a hot meal and here the word of God shared. We have a concert series with a variety of genres every semester. Students lead different Bible studies each semester. There is a weekly service project where students can get out into the community and serve in some capacity. We get out of Houston every Spring Break for a week long mission trip. The students also do a great job of helping in the local churches in Pasadena with Disciple Now's, Retreats, Student Ministries and various other ways that we help to serve the local church.

One of the great advantages to having a building on campus is that students have the ability to hang out and study, play games, and enjoy getting together for a cup of coffee or a Bible Study. It is truly an asset to the ministry for all of the things that we do as a ministry.
