Houston Baptist University

hbu_01Houston Baptist University is a Christian liberal arts university dedicated to the development of the intellect, the moral character, and the spiritual lives of its students. We offer what few other faith-based colleges or universities can - a dynamic learning environment on a diverse, real-world campus located in one of the nation's largest and most international cities. HBU is proud of its engaging, hands-on education and its broad range of student life activities.

Since its inception in 1960, HBU has grown into a thriving community of faith and scholarship. This year HBU welcomed the inaugural class to its new Honors College, which emphasizes the great works of antiquity and modern classics as powerful foundations for the development of critical thinking.

With more than 40 academic programs ranging from communications to Christianity, from accounting to art, from pre-med to pre-law, HBU offers students an education designed for today's rapidly changing world. Current enrollment is over 2,500 with 70% of the student body commuting from various parts of the city.

hbu_02The University has recently dedicated two arts-related facilities: the Morris Cultural Arts Center, which houses performance spaces and three museum collections, and the University Academic Center, which houses instructional space for the Honors College as well as the art and communications programs.

HBU students add depth to their college experience through involvement in intramurals, club sports, and a variety of social, service, and honor organizations. The Community Life + Worship program allows students to grow their faith through on-campus worship services, small group studies, community service, and mission opportunities. Houston Baptist has a diverse student population comprised of many faith backgrounds. It truly is a mission field to its own. Here are some of our ongoing ministries...

  • Freshmen Involved in Reaching Maturity (F.I.R.M.) - Three separate groups meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for in-depth discipleship and accountability with freshmen.
  • Quest worship service - meets Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Belin Chapel. This is student-led and features the Refuge band and speakers from on campus and the community.
  • Mission Munchies - a meal provided after Chapel on Wednesdays at 12 noon for $1. Churches and student organizations sponsor the meal and all proceeds go to student missions.
  • Ministry Leadership Council is the group of student leaders that facilitates ministries such as Disciple Nows, International student work, evangelism, and commuter activities.
